Seafarers affected by piracy

Piracy is among the worst things that can happen to seafarers, and often the people who have lived through it are told not to talk about it. SeafarerHelp assists seafarers and their families who have been affected by piracy. Through the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP) we have the experience of dealing with hostages from Somalia, seafarers who have been attacked in the Gulf of Guinea, and providing pre departure training materials to prepare seafarers for piracy. In collaboration with industry partners we produce Good Practice Guides to encourage companies and manning agents to deal well with seafarers and their families in the event of an attack. Please see the ISWAN website for free downloads of the GPGs in French and English and further information, including stories of seafarers and their families, or contact us for further information or to discuss your experiences of piracy or for help at any stage.
