What is ISAN?
ISAN, or the International Seafarers Assistance Network, is an international charity registered in the UK which operates the SeafarerHelp service

What is SeafarerHelp?
SeafarerHelp is the a completely free and confidential, multilingual advice and support network for seafarers and their families.

What kind of problems can SeafarerHelp help me with?
SeafarerHelp can offer support with welfare, family, financial matters, and in fact any problems that seafarers face while at work or at home. If you want to talk about it, we want to listen!

When should I contact about a problem?
You can contact us at anytime that suits you. You don't have to wait until things are desperate.

Is it an English speaking service?
Although we answer all calls in English, we have a multilingual staff, including staff fluent in the main seafaring languages of Filipino, Russian and Chinese, available 24 hours per day in most languages.

Can you connect me with my family free of charge?
SeafarerHelp is not able to connect you with your family, but if you contact us with a problem we may be able to keep your family updated in emergency situations by contacting them on your behalf.

Where is my nearest SeafarerHelp office?
SeafarerHelp's office is in London. However we have an extensive network of maritime organisations who we can refer you to for support locally..

Do I have to be a member to contact SeafarerHelp?
No ? the service is provided free of charge to all seafarers, their families, friends. It can also be used by other welfare agencies to assist them with dealing with seafarers issues.

Is ISAN / SeafarerHelp part of the ITF?
No, we are an independent charitable organisation.

Is it confidential?
Yes, absolutely. Anything you say will be treated in strictest confidence and your name will not be given to anyone unless you specifically request it.

Can I use the service if I work in a seafarers centre?
Yes. You can use SeafarerHelp as a reference point for any problem or enquiry.

Why isn't the freephone available from my country?
We are limited by the services provided by the telecoms sompanies in your country, many of which do not have international freecall services. However, we are always interested to hear about new services as they arise.

What is the ISPS code?
It's a security standard adopted by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It places responsibility on port authorities and ship owners to identify risk factors and take appropriate measures to reduce security risks in ports. The code came into force on 1st July 2004. For further information, please visit the IMO?s website: www.imo.org

How does the ISPS code affect me?
In certain ports, because of the measures adopted by the port authorities or ship owners, it may mean that seafarers are denied shore leave or visitors from shore side.

What can I do if I am denied shore leave or denied visitors from shore side, as a result of the ISPS code?
You can contact SeafarerHelp and we will request assistance from welfare or other agencies where appropriate and ask them to perhaps visit you on board.
