About ISAN

The International Seafarers Assistance Network (ISAN) is a charity registered in the UK and based in London which provides a unique service to the world’s seafarers. Established in October 2001, ISAN provides a link between seafarers and local maritime organisations. The service provided by ISAN is called SeafarerHelp. Find out more about the SeafarerHelp service by clicking on About SeafarerHelp.

ISAN’s objective is to help seafarers and their families with any problems or questions they may have and ensure that they receive quick and helpful advice from our SeafarerHelp service.

ISAN promotes the networking of welfare agencies and other organisations dealing with seafarers’ welfare and rights. We act as a reference point and direct enquiries to the relevant agency. We work in partnership with existing agencies and relevant welfare bodies on a co-operative basis in order to provide the best possible service to seafarers and their families.

ISAN is governed by a board of Trustees who work alongside a Management Advisory body consisting of various agencies from all over the world, including Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), Mission to Seafarers (MtS), International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA), the International Shipping Federation, and the Seafarers’ International Research Centre (SIRC).

Our mission is to provide seafarers and their families with the information they require to make informed choices about their lives. Our primary means of doing this is through a 24 hour helpdesk staffed by a team of dedicated officers. These officers listen to the seafarers before providing a range of possible solutions. When the choice has been made, we work through partner agencies in order to honour that choice as closely as possible.

Our vision is to develop an extensive network of agencies who can provide access to appropriate help, support and advice to seafarers and their families wherever they may be and whenever they may require it.

Our objectives:

  • To provide low cost ways in which seafarers and their families can contact us.

  • To build and maintain a comprehensive database of maritime and non-maritime specific agencies who can provide help to seafarers and their families

  • To promote co-operation and collaboration amongst agencies
